Fun Thanksgiving Craft for Kids

Round up a flock of these paper-bag gobblers, and young holiday guests can take home more than leftovers.

What you’ll need

• Medium sized brown paper bag (not lunch size)
• Acrylic paint or crayons in brown, orange, red, green, and yellow
• Rubber band
• Newspaper
• Plastic spoon
• Felt scraps in brown, orange, green, and red
• 2 Medium googly eyes
• Scissors
• Glue

How to make it

1. Lay paper bag flat on the work surface. Use crayons or paint (crayons are less messy and will be much easier for younger children) to add stripes of colors to the opening of the bag, about 5-6” long. Be sure to add stripes to the sides as well.
2. Cut the strips with scissors. Paint or color the other side of the strips. This is a little messier, so be sure kid are wearing smocks and your work surface is protected. When painting the other side of a strip, the paper may curl up on you. Just hold it flat for a few seconds and this will correct it (see image). Allow the strips to dry completely.
3. Fill the bag halfway with crumpled newspaper. Gather the bag together with your hands, just under the strips, and secure with a rubber band.
4. Pinch the bag, just under the rubber band, to bend the strips upward so that when the bag lies on its side, the strips will be pointing upward. Use your hands to manipulate the strips to point up; these are your turkey’s feathers.
5. Cut an triangle out of orange felt for the beak. Cut a heart shape out of red or marron felt for the wattle. Cut two triangles out of brown felt for the feet, and the cut two triangles out of each foot for the toes. Cut a bowtie out of green felt (or whatever color your little turkey maker wants). The bowtie can be a little fiddly to cut. Make it easier by cutting two triangles and a circle and glue them together. Glue the bow-tie where the spoon meets the bag.
